Year 2 Spellings
Spelling
We will be using the Little Wandle Year 2 spelling scheme for the children to consolidate their phonics and continue on a bridge to spelling, where the children will learn words based on spelling patterns.
We start the year by reviewing Year 1 spellings. If your child needs extra support with these, you will receive a copy in your child's homework journal. You will also find a list of the Year 1 words on Koala's class page.
The key words we will learn for Year 2 are in the back of every child's reading diary and are listed below.
Please support your child with these as much as possible.
Common Exception Words for Year 2
Exception words are words in which the English spelling code works in an unusual or uncommon way. They are not words for which phonics 'doesn't work', but they may be exceptions to spelling rules, or words which use a particular combination of letters to represent sound patterns in a rare or unique way.
Exception words are also referred to as tricky words or sight words.
Some exception words are used very frequently, which is why children are introduced to them very early on in their phonics learning.
Here is the list of words that the children are expected to be able to spell by end of the Year 2:
