International Bomber Command Centre, Lincoln visit

16th December 2022

In Giraffe's History topic of World War II, the class have learnt the importance of the Royal Air Force (RAF) and the part Lincolnshire played in the war effort.  During World War II,  Lincolnshire became known as “Bomber County” due to the fact that it was home to a large number of airfields – 49, to be exact, which was more than any other county in England.

To support their learning of World War II, Giraffes visited IBCC near Lincoln and took part in activities:

  • Hands-on activities using real-life stories, from those who were there, and artefacts used by Bomber Command in World War II. The workshops focus on remembrance, sacrifice, suffering and bravery and help bring to life the events of the era.
  • Access to the exhibition. This used interactive displays activities and first-hand experiences to tell the story of Bomber Command and those affected by their actions.
  • A guided tour of the Spire, Memorial Walls and Peace Gardens with an expert tour guide.

Science experiment where we looked at water absorption into gummy bears - Do they act like capillaries?

History

We used Play-Doh and maps of Europe to play out the events of WW2 from the first outbreak of war to the eve of the Battle of Britain. The Play- Doh represented the different factions and movements.

Science: We conducted experiments to try and observe and measure the impact of exercise on heart rate

Design and Technology

Textiles: Waistcoats

Giraffes cut and shaped fabric in preparation for the making of their waist coats which they have designed, for their ‘Make Do and Mend’ campaign. The waistcoats are being made from repurposed clothes by recycling the old fabrics.

Science

Giraffes drew detailed pictures of the circulatory system as part of our Animals including Humans Science topic.  They drew them on the playground so they could walk the journey of a red blood cell around the body.

Drama in English - the children were guided by each other while one person describes some evil, malevolent woods.

History – the children chronologically ordered world events/historical periods that they have studied as part of a challenge.

Music – practising strumming the ukuleles in pairs and echoing different strumming patterns

Science

As part of our work on the circulatory system, the children have dissected hearts to look at the composition of the organ, paying particular attention to the atriums and ventricles and major arteries and veins.

English

In English, the Year 6s role played two people discussing the events of war approaching their country and their hopes and fears while they have a cup pf tea.

Science

This term's Science, we are learning all about the circulatory system. We made blood smoothies to represent the different components of blood and then did jigsaws of the heart detailing the different chambers.
